The exhibition showcases the works of four women artists of different generations, nationalities, and cultural backgrounds. Taking inspiration from the truism phrase “All things are delicately interconnected” reiterated by Jenny Holzer during the global pandemic, the exhibit presents works that reflect on our relationship to our cultural and natural environment.
While each artist has their own unique code of expressions, we observe a relay of common attitudes and themes between their works. Holzer has shown us the power of short and simple texts in the form of minimal but impactful LED works. Her works address our society, and Tajima’s abstract jacquard-woven portraits investigate industrial and information production, but they both challenge the established system and build a new order. Tajima’s methods echo Ando’s depiction of the transient moments of nature, as they both use technology and craftsmanship to express the relationship between nature and civilization. Ando’s unique vantage point of having a multicultural background between Japan and California is mirrored in Sattapon as she addresses socially engaging topics informed by her own experiences of living abroad as an Asian woman of ethnic minority descent. Sattapon, who doesn't hesitate to experiment with all kinds of media, delivers her artistic voice to the community, as Jenny Holzer has done in various public spaces. As much as all the living creatures on Earth do, these artists exchange their influences, whether they are aware of them or not. In these ways, they are interconnected. With calm yet strong resistance to the status quo, they disseminate expressions that provoke us to engage more intensely with the society and the environment around us.
